How To Create A Watercolor Wash For Stamped Images

  1. Lightly Dampen the Paper
    • Before applying color, use a clean brush to lightly dampen the watercolor paper. This helps the watercolors flow smoothly and blend naturally.
  2. Apply the Watercolor Wash
    • Dilute the ink with water. Load the brush with ink and gently brush over the watercolor paper. If you want a gradient effect, start with a more intense color at one edge and blend it outward.
  3. Blend and Layer Colors
    • For a vibrant yet soft look, try layering multiple colors. Let them bleed into each other while wet for a soft watercolor effect, or wait for one layer to dry before adding another to build depth.
  4. Adjust and Define Details
    • If certain areas feel too bold, add more water and blot with a paper towel to lift excess pigment. You can also add deeper shades to enhance shadows or create contrast.
  5. Let It Dry
    • If you can, create the watercolor wash ahead of time and let it air dry. If time is an issue, you can dry the wash using a heat tool on the low setting. Dry from both sides to minimize the paper curling.
  6. Stamp the Image
    • Once dry, stamp your images. If your watercolor paper is completely dry, you can stamp using Tuxedo Black Momento Ink. However, if your paper is damp or wet, use Stazon Ink to prevent bleeding.

Tips for Success

  • Use high quality watercolor paper – it absorbs water better than card stock and prevents warping
  • Start with light washes – you can always build up your color gradually.
  • Test your colors first – make sure the colors complement the design of the stamp. If you need help choosing colors, use the Stampin’ Up! Color Coach for ideas.
  • Have fun – the beauty of watercolor is the unpredictability and flow of colors.

This easy watercolor stamping technique is a fantastic way to add charm and elegance to your handmade cards. Whether you’re crafting for a special occasion or just for fun, this method transforms stamped images into gorgeous, artistic creations.
