Are you looking for a new way to add glam, sparkle, or shine to your handmade cards. Today, I am sharing the perfect duo to do just that! I have incorporated heat embossing with layering stencils into today’s cards! In today’s cardmaking world, stencils are, also, referred to as masks. For the purpose of this post, the two words are interchangeable.
The Frosted Forest Stamp Set and Layering Masks can either be used together or separately. Prior to starting, I used the Stampin’ Up Color Wheel to chose three analogous colors using shades of green: Shaded Spruce, Garden Green and Soft Seafoam.
Below, are three cards I made using the technique of heat embossing with layering stencils. Each card was made a little differently, but the technique was always the same. It’s hard to see the sparkle and shine in the pictures, but in person there is a beautiful sheen and sparkle to each one. However, you can see the mounds of snow on the evergreen branches.
Heat Embossing With Layering Masks Technique
Below, is the card I made during the video tutorial. I first stamped the large evergreen image in Shaded Spruce. Next, I used the layering masks to apply color. Each of the layering masks are “notched” in the lower left corner of the mask. This allows you to align the masks each time you use them. In the video tutorial, I give you several ideas for aligning the masks to ensure accuracy in your image. The masks are, also, marked with the letters “A,” “B,” and “C.” These letters indicate the order in which to use the masks.
To apply the color, I used Blending Brushes and Shaded Spruce with Mask “A” and Garden Green with Mask “B.” Because I wanted to ensure that my ink was dry prior to adding Versamark Ink and Embossing Powder, I dried the ink using my heat tool on the lowest setting. Next, I used my Embossing Buddy over the entire piece of cardstock making sure to go over the image a few times. By doing so, the embossing powder would adhere only to the areas with the Versamark Ink.
After positioning my mask, I applied Versamark Ink direct to paper by dragging the ink pad over the stencil (mask) several times. By doing this, I was confident, I had good coverage to the open areas from the mask. After carefully removing the mask, I sprinkled the image with white embossing powder and used my heat tool to set the powder.
To finish off my card, I layered the image layer on Garden Green. I added a bow using the Shaded Spruce 1/2″ Satin & Sheer Ribbon. Next, I adhered the combined layers to a Soft Seafoam card base. For embellishments, I used the Adhesive-Backed Sparkle Gems.
Decorative Trees Bundle Video Tutorial
In the video tutorial below, I demonstrate how to add heat embossing using layering stencils (masks). This technique adds shine, texture and dimension to your cards. There are several tips and tricks for using layering masks with blending brushes, Versamark Ink, embossing powders and cleaning the layering masks. Afterwards, I use the image to create a holiday card.
Below, you will find another card using this same technique, in addition to, dry embossing with an embossing folder. Further down in the post, there is a downloadable PDF with measurements, pictures, supplies and instructions
I hope you enjoyed this unique technique to create a holiday card with shimmer and added texture and dimension. Leave me a comment below and share your thoughts on heat embossing with layering stencils.
Additional Card Using Heat Embossing With Layering Stencils
Below, I reversed my process. I first used the layering masks to lay down my color. Here, I only used masks “A” & “B.” Next, I stamped the large tree using Versamark Ink over the layered image. Lastly, I heat embossed with white embossing powder.
To add texture and dimension, I dry embossed the finished image using the Snowflake Sky 3D Embossing Folder. I love how this card turned out!
