Today, I am sharing how to make a fun and easy Split Top Fun Fold card! Ironically, this fun fold is an original. I came up with the idea by playing with my card stock and trying to create an easy fun fold. Yet, if I were to search the web, I am sure there is probably something the same or similar out there. During the video, I made the comment that I did not know what to call this card. But, while writing the tutorial, I came up with the name “Split Top Fun Fold.” I am sure you will understand how I came up with that name, once you see the tutorial.
Split Top Fun Fold Design
The basic design of this card doesn’t get much easier than this! I started with an 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ piece of Smoky Slate. After scoring at 4 1/4″, I cut the top 2 1/2″ off of the card front. I, then, used this piece for the front panel of the card (Refer to diagram, below). Next, I used a piece of striped Misty Moonlight from the Neutrals Designer Series Paper.
For the focal point, I used the Inspirational Sketches Stamp Set to stamp the bird in Smoky Slate on Basic White Card Stock. Next, I layered the Basic White layer on Misty Moonlight and adhered it to the Smoky Slate panel. When adhering the combined panels to the card front, it is important to only put adhesive on the back portion of the panel that will adhere to the card. I used the Basic Gray and Smoky Slate Pearls for embellishments.
Split Top Fun fold Inside
For the inside of the card, I used a 4″ x 5 1/4″ layer of Basic White. With this card design, it is important to place your sentiment below the area of the cut out panel. Otherwise, your sentiment will likely show when your card is closed. To dress up the inside, I added a 3/8″ strip to the bottom of the Basic White layer.
Below is the video tutorial for making a Split Top Fun Fold Card. In the video, there are instructions for cutting out the front panel, constructing the card, as well as, two additional cards with ideas of how to “step up” the card design. Further down in the post, you will find the two additional cards shown in the video, diagram, and a downloadable PDF. I hope you enjoyed this fun and easy Split Top Fun Fold! Leave me a comment and let me know what you think about this card design!
Additional Split Top Fun Fold Cards
For the Split Top Fun Fold, above, I stepped up the card by adding a layer of the Mediterranean Blooms 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper to Garden Green before adhering the combined layers to the card front. For the focal point, I used the Exposed Brick 3D Embossing Folder as a panel layer. I then, fussy cut an image from the edge of the Designer Series Paper and adhered it to the embossed layer. Matting the sentiment with Garden Green added a nice touch.
The Split Top Fun Fold, above, was made using the Thoughtful Journey 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper and and Thoughtful Wishes Dies. The card base was Wild Wheat layered with Cajun Craze. two of the colors found in the Designer Series Paper. Here, I used Basic White layers embossed using the Exposed Brick 3D Embossing Folder on the front of the card. Because this fun fold design supports viewing the inside layer, I decided to use a layer of the Designer Series Paper in place of Basic White on the inside of my card. The piece of Designer Paper I chose not only complimented my card, but, it was perfect for stamping the inside sentiment directly on the paper. I love the way this Split Top Fun Fold turned out!
