Have you ever used Stampin’ Up Decorative Masks to apply color to a stamped image? Decorative masks, also, known as layering masks are easy to use and a great way to add color, dimension and interest to a stamped image. Today, I want to provide some tips for using decorative masks, as well as, how to use Blending Brushes with the masks to apply color to your stamped images.
Below, is an easy card made using the Frosted Forest Bundle by Stampin’ Up! In this bundle, there are stamped images and dies for, both, deciduous and evergreen trees. Additionally, there are six decorative masks used to color the stamped images. There are three masks for coloring the tree and three masks for coloring the evergreens. Let’s take a look at a few tips for using Decorative Masks.
Tips for Using Stampin’ Up Decorative Masks
Stampin’ Up Decorative Masks are numbered. The numbers are suggestive of the order in which the masks should be used. Additionally, there is a small “notch” in the upper left hand corner of the mask. The “notch” provides a point of reference to aid in the alignment of each mask.
When using the masks, I recommend securing your card stock with “low tack” tape. Next, align the first mask with the stamped image. Once aligned, secure the mask with “low tack” tape. Next, trace the notch on the paper. This allows you to align the subsequent decorative masks with the “notch.”
Finally, you are ready to color your image! Select the colors you want to use for each portion of the image. In this case, I chose Pecan Pie for the trunk of the tree (mask #1) , Crushed Curry for the leaves (mask #2), and Pumpkin Pie for the leaves (mask #3).
When applying the color, use Blending Brushes. Start off with a “light hand” when applying color. You can always go back and add more color, but you can’t go back and take the color away.
