In the video below, I’ll walk you through the layered stencils and show you how I created the shaped card from start to finish.

Why I Love the Plumeria Spray Stencil

The Plumeria Spray stencil captures the beauty of tropical flowers with multiple stencil layers that add depth and dimension. By simply changing your ink colors, you can create everything from bright island-inspired blooms to soft, elegant florals.

This stencil is perfect for:

  • Birthday cards
  • Thank you cards
  • Thinking of you cards
  • Friendship cards
  • Encouragement cards

The layered design does most of the work for you, making it easy to achieve beautiful results every time.

Creating Easy Plumeria Stencil Cards

For today’s cards, I chose color combinations that highlight the tropical nature of the plumeria flowers while keeping the card layouts clean and easy to recreate.

The key to successful stencil layering is working from lighter colors to darker shades and gradually building intensity. This technique creates smooth transitions and helps the floral details stand out beautifully.

To finish the cards, I added sentiments that complement the floral designs without overwhelming the background. Sometimes the simplest card layouts allow the stencil work to shine the brightest.

Tips for Better Stencil Layering

If you’re working with layered stencils, here are a few tips that help achieve crisp results:

  • Secure your stencil with low-tack tape or a sticky mat to prevent shifting.
  • Begin blending with a light hand and gradually deepen the color.
  • Use separate blending brushes for different color families.
  • Clean the stencil between layers when needed for crisp details.
  • Test your color combinations on scrap cardstock before blending directly onto your project.

These simple steps can make a big difference in the finished look of your cards.

Card One

For my first card, I wanted to create a soft, tropical-inspired palette that would let the beautiful details of the Plumeria Spray Stencil shine. I used Altenew Fresh Dye Inks in Rouge, Buttercream, Chamomile, Sunray, Fresh Leaf, and Reindeer Moss to blend the floral and foliage layers, creating subtle depth and dimension. Instead of a traditional A2 card, I chose the largest die from the Spellbinders Mirrored Arch Labels to create a shaped card base from Spellbinders Rainforest Cardstock. The second and third largest dies were used to add coordinating layers that frame the design beautifully. To complete the card, I added a bold Thinking of You sentiment from the Essentially Yours Sentiment Die Collection. It creates a simple but eye-catching focal point and perfectly complements the soft floral background.

For my second card, I chose a softer color palette to give the plumeria blooms a delicate, elegant look. I used Altenew Fresh Dye Inks in Buttercream, Peachy Keen, Blush, Lime, and Fresh Leaf to create gentle shading and subtle dimension.

To frame the design, I cut my layers with the Spellbinders A2 Matting Basics dies. A black mat adds contrast and makes the soft florals stand out beautifully. I then adhered the finished panel to a Spellbinders Dahlia A2 card base, which complements the warm tones in the flowers.

For the sentiment, I selected the Thanks die from the Simon Hurley and Spellbinders Every Day Sentiments Dies. As a finishing touch, I added Spellbinders Aura Opalescent Color Essentials Sequins to the center of each flower. They catch the light beautifully and add just the right amount of sparkle.

Card Three

For my third card, I created another shaped design, but this time I decided to step outside my comfort zone with my color choices. I’m usually drawn to softer palettes, but I wanted to try something a little bolder—and I’m so glad I did! I used Altenew Fresh Dye Inks in Pink Crystal, Fuchsia, Lime, Fresh Leaf, Buttercream, and Midnight Violet. Together, they create vibrant tropical blooms with lots of contrast and personality

Because I wanted a slightly lighter color, I used Spellbinders Peridot Cardstock for the shaped card base. This time, I added layers cut from Spellbinders Lilac Cardstock, which beautifully frames the stenciled image and ties in with the rich floral tones. To finish the design, I scattered a few Spellbinders Aura Opalescent Color Essentials Sequins around the sentiment for a subtle touch of sparkle.

One of my favorite things about creating is trying something I didn’t think I’d like. This card was a wonderful reminder to step outside my creative comfort zone every once in a while. You never know when a color combination you wouldn’t normally choose will become one of your favorites.

I hope this inspires you to pull out your supplies, experiment with a new palette, and spend a little time creating something that brings you joy. 💛
