Today, I am sharing a fun and easy technique known as the Fracture Card Technique. It is, also, referred to as the Fracture Technique and Faux Shutter card. The Fracture Technique is an easy way to add interest, texture and dimension to your layout. The layer appears “fractured” and pieced back together, almost, like a puzzle. So let’s get started and see how to create a fracture card.

Fracture Card Using Designer Series Paper

Fractured Card Technique Used With Perennial Lavender Designer Series Paper

In the card, I chose to pair Gorgeous Grape with the Perennial Lavender Designer Series Paper. But, further down in the post, you will see I used an embossed layer to “fracture.” I have found that using the same color strips, as the color of the card base, seems to work best.

Next, you will need a square. Here, I chose to use a square die from Stylish Shapes. You can use any size square, but the smaller the square, the more dramatic the fracture. When adhering the square, you want to adhere it so that it is in the shape of a diamond. Now, you are ready to create the “fracture.”

Creating the Fracture

Start by placing a strip directly next to the square. You will adhere the strip starting at a corner of the square to the edge of the layer of Designer Series Paper. Now, work your way around the square ensuring that the strips are “butted up” to the edge of the square and the edge of the adjoining strip. This will ensure a clean, crisp look. Once done, adhere the “fractured” layer of Designer Series Paper to the card base.

Framed by the strips, the diamond becomes the focal point. Do as much or as little as you choose. I chose to add a sentiment with a branch of greenery and a stamped floral image using colors in the Designer Series Paper.

I finished by adding a Linen Thread bow and Purple Fine Shimmer Gems as my embellishments.

Fracture Card: Inside

One of my favorite ways to finish off the inside layer is to layer a matching strip of card stock and Designer Series Paper and add it to the edge of my layer. I, often, wait to stamp the inside sentiment until I am ready to send the card.
