I am, frequently, asked where I get my card making ideas. Like most, I design my own, refer to the catalog for ideas, CASE, or look on Pinterest. But, my favorite “tool” for easy card making ideas is using card layout designs! I have a box full of card layouts that I use daily in my card making. Card layouts are simply patterns or templates that inspire ideas for card designs. Often, you may, also, hear a card layout referred to as a “card sketch.”

Tips on How To Use A Card layout designs

  • Card layouts serve as a guide.  To make quick & easy cards, use the card layout as shown.
  • Layers in a design can be whatever you want them to be: card stock, Designer Series Paper, stamped, embossed or a technique. You can even add an extra layer, if you want to.  Make it your own!
  • Change the orientation of the card layout. Just because you see a template in portrait doesn’t mean you can’t use it to make a card in landscape.  You may have to adjust measurements shorter or longer. Changing the orientation may work better for certain stamps, dies, etc.
  • “Step up” your card by adding more layers, ribbon, gems, etc.
  • When making your card layouts, either label each layer with the measurements or write them on a Post-It note and adhere them to the back of the layout.
  • Keep you layouts in a box or file so that you can refer back to them to use over and over, again!

Each month I will share three card layout designs with examples of two or three cards using each of the layouts. As you watch the video tutorial, create your card layouts along with me by stopping the video along the way. Then store them in a box or some sort of container to refer to over and over, again.
